Honoring Dolly's birthday today by celebrating her Imagination Library which provides free books to children across the world!
I'm not sure if you know much about her upbringing, but it was far from what most would consider ideal. She was born in rural east Tennessee and was one of 12 children; her father was illiterate, and they were dirt poor.
Inspired by her childhood, Dolly started her Imagination Library in 1995 to serve the children of the county she grew up in. Her goal was simple: to foster a love of reading in children from birth to age five and their families by mailing them a free book each month.
Today, her program spans five countries– the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Ireland– and gifts over 1 million free books each month to children around the world.

Sadly, not everyone is eligible because eligibility is based on whether or not there is a local sponsor. This is checked by entering your zip code here. When I first found out about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, we were living in Austin, TX, and we weren't eligible. However, my parents signed Hattie up, and we look forward to reading our new books as a family when we visit!
All of the books are age-appropriate, and, you guys, there are some GEMS! At the end of each book is a blurb about the Imagination Library and a picture of Dolly, and Hattie always points to her and says, "look! There's Dolly!" It is so cute and gives us a chance to talk about the importance of giving back to others.
