Even before I had my heart set on owning a LFL, I was dying to join Book of the Month Club. One of my fellow English teachers-turned-BFF is an avid reader and has been with BOTM for YEARS! But, for me, the timing was never right– first, it was no time to read for fun with my Master's, then it was only read parenting books, then it was an overwhelm of two years worth of books in my "to read stack"...
But now, my friends, the time has come! One of my sweet girlfriends listened to me have the above conversation over lunch one day, then surprised me with a 6-month BOTM subscription (that I will obv keep going). So stinking thoughtful!
My absolute favorite thing about BOTM club is having the options narrowed down for me. There are SO many amazing authors and books out there, and I get overwhelmed in choosing what to read next. Even before I was a member, I would always peep BOTM's choices, and they're always so good.
Each month you can choose between 5 new books of varying genres, choose a book from a previous month, or skip a month if nothing is tickling your fancy or you're busy.
For the month of December, I was between A Flicker in the Dark and A History of Wild Places. I also considered The Holiday Swap which sounded really cute, but I had a hard time straying from my typical thriller genre for my long-awaited FIRST BOTM!
I loved A Flicker in the Dark,
and would recommend it. It is definitely one of my favorite thrillers I've read in a long time. I really like Willingham's writing style and look forward to following her journey to her next novel!
- Quickly jumps into the plot... I struggle with books that are slow to build
- Page turner... The ending of nearly every single chapter was a cliff hanger and made me want to keep reading!
- Surprise ending... I thought I had the plot figured out by page 100, but by page 200 I wasn't sure, and I was completely surprised at how it ended! In a good way!
